Gee Look at all this bandwith... Gee Was the Fido gateway invited? Or
are they "eavesdropping" on USENET? Just who authorized this monitoring
of our postings anyway? :-)

Lighten up Jim, Im not sure about the FIDO users, but here on USENET,
we really done have that many criminals. Just "RADIO CRIMINALS", and
we're proud of it! You see we believe it takes a really small brain
for a body of lawmakers to vote somthing as absurd as the ECPA into
law. Its really sad when we get down to things like this here in the US.
One day the public will realize they got screwed , and fight it (I HOPE).

And Bob P., Let me take this opportunity to THANK you for your informative
postings over the years.

Far more good than anyone can tally up comes from the monitoring of
Municipal frequencies. If more people would constructively get involved
(not in the way), Far more REAL criminals would be caught. (but then
we dont have room to lock em up, but thats another problem,hihi)

Re: police from CA on 42 MHZ- the frequencies you mention are allocated (in CA)
to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). They use a semi-duplex system (eg: the
mobiles and base are on separate frequencies). There's quite a scheme for
allocating the channels, so I can't tell you the exact locations, but typically
you'll hear a lot of highway numbers that, with a map, can tell you
geographically where you are hearing. The only consistent identifier for unit
numbers is the first digit(s) which signify the CHP office #. If you hear
'Mary', that means it's a 'motor unit', or motorcycle. The other alphas stand
for other obscure things. E-mail me if you'd like the complete list.
The skip I hear from here, on CHP channels, is usually from the deep south and
Texas and I have yet to identify where it's coming from!!

Subject: How to fix bugs yourself in my Hypercard Ham Stacks

This is a reposting of a previous posting that I made to describe how to
fix minor problems in my Ham Stacks.  I have had three requests for this
data in the past week, so figured I'd repost it for those who are interested.
For any who have (or may have in the future) these Ham Stacks, I suggest
that you print this and save it, since these are general directions and not
specific to any one of the stacks.  Others can press 'n' now.

I do have specific corrections which I will make available via email for
anyone who currently has version 2.0 of the Technician Ham Stack.  If you
wish a copy of this, please let me know.  As for the on-line versions,
Peter will be upgrading those as soon as I send that list of instructions
to him as well (no, I haven't done that yet).

One more thing:  If you DO find and fix any "bugs" in these stacks, PLEASE
send me your corrections, so that I can fix my own stacks.  Email the list
to [e-mail].  I will need the Stack name (Novice, etc.), Stack version
(found in Info), card name (or first word of question, like 2A-1.1, which is
always unique), and a description of the problem.  And THANKS!

There are three major types of bugs in these stacks:  1.  Misspelled words
in the question or answers, 2.  Incorrect answer choice, 3.  Incorrect
card name, causing card to never be accessed.

To fix these stacks yourself (expert HyperCard users, please bear with me,
this is written for an uninitiated user), first do the following (these
commands can be done from ANY CARD in the stack):

1.  Ctrl M to get the message box.
2.  Type in the message box "set userlevel to 5".
3.  Type in the message box "show menubar".

4A. To correct misspelled words in question or answers, first go to the
    card in question...you're probably already there....but if not,
    type in message box "go to card "#123"" (assuming you want card #123).
    a.  Pull down the Tools Menu, then choose Field (top far right ICON).
    b.  Select the field to fix by clicking in that field.
    c.  Pull down the Object Menu, then choose Field Info.
    d.  Unlock Text (click in the checkbox).
    e.  Pull down the Tools Menu, then choose Browse (top far left ICON).
    f.  Edit the text in the field as necessary to correct it.
    g*. Repeat Steps a-c to get to the Field Info again.
    h*. Lock Text (click in the checkbox).
    i*. Pull down the Tools Menu, then choose Browse.
        CORRECTION COMPLETE.
    *(If you are doing a lot of typo corrections, it's sometimes easier
      to unlock all of the answers and question, fix all of the typos,
      even on other cards, THEN lock all of the answers and question.
      Just don't forget to lock them when you are done, or you take the
      chance of inadvertently changing or destroying the text accidentally
      while taking the test.)

4B. To correct incorrect answer choice, first go to the card in question...
    as described in 4A above.
    a.  Go to card script, either by holding down Option and Ctrl keys,
        and pressing C (only works with HyperCard v1.1 or newer), or
        by pulling down Object Menu, then choose Card Info, then click
        the Script button.
    b.  Edit the answer line as appropriate.  To choose A as the answer,
        this line should be in script:
        put "A" into rightone
        NOTE that the letter should be capitalized.
    c.  Press OK button.
        CORRECTION COMPLETE (Note this correction will not actually
        appear until the NEXT time you come to this card, so it's
        not obvious that it has been fixed).

4C. To correct the card name....this one's more difficult.  First you must
    figure out what IS the right card name....unless you already know (ie,
    I tell you).  The symptom of THIS bug is that when you press the NEXT
    arrow, nothing happens, but when you press the NEXT arrow a second time,
    it goes to the question AFTER the next question.  Pressing PREV arrow
    twice will get you to the question BEFORE the bad question.
    a.  To determine the right card name, look at the question number of
        the previous question (say 20), add one to it, then type in the
        message box:
        put item 21 of questlist
    b.  The correct card name will appear in the message box.
    c.  Now go to the PREVIOUS card (let's say the card you want is
        #122) by typing in the message box:
        go to card "#121"
    d.  Now go to the next card by pulling down the Go Menu, then
        choosing Next.  DON'T use the NEXT arrow at the bottom of the
        card!!!  You already know that doesn't work.
    e.  Pull down Object Menu, and choose Card Info.
    f.  Edit the correct name into the card field.  It should be a
        number sign (#) followed by the card number you want (if this
        is the 10th card in the stack, the card name will be #8; card
        name is always 2 less than its card sequence in the stack).
        CORRECTION COMPLETE

5.  The stack has now been fixed, and you don't HAVE to hide the menubar
    and change the userlevel to use the test, but when you come back into
    the stack for the first time after the fix, these will have been set
    to their correct state.  Here's how to fix these without exiting the
    stack:
    a.  Type in the message box:
        hide menubar
    b.  Type in the message box:
        set userlevel to 1

As I said before, I will have some "fixes" that you can try your hand
at with the Technician stack shortly.  Email me if you desire the list.

Subject: iambic keyer question.

I've used an iambic keyer for almost 20 years now, and have always
used my thumb for sending dashes. I guess now I'll have to reverse the
leads on the old vibroplex and re-learn everything!

Subject: ICOM IC-32AT Mods??

I thought I'd beat the Christmas rush, so I went out and bought
myself an IC-32AT dual band handheld - nice radio. I was wondering
if anyone has any mods for it, such as:

    1. Extending VHF band transmit.

    2. Extending UHF band receive and transmit.

    3. Cross band repeater function.

    4. anything else....

Subject: Multiband mobile antennas

I have recently purchased a used Yaesu FT-727R handheld, which operates
on both 2m and 70cm.  I am quite happy with it, but I have a question
about how best to 'antenna' it.  A little quick math shows me that a
1/4 wave 2m antenna is approximately 20 inches long.  This also happens
to be 3/4 wavelength on 450MHz (more or less).  What are the impedance
and resonant characteristics of a 3/4 wave antenna?  What's the rule:
Even 1/4 wavelengths, odd 1/4 wavelengths? Both?  Are there any antennas
out there (for construction or, heaven forbid, purchase 8-) ) that will give
me reasonable SWR on both bands?  (I hope to use this mobile, so a RS
discone would be a little conspicuous.)  Any ideas/pointers/vectors/
articles/etc will be greatly appreciated.

PS - Anyone know how to speed up the squelch opening time on this handheld?

Subject: My Father Talks to Hams (HUMOR)

The following is a true story:

It was about 17 years ago and I was in the second grade at Washington Street
School, in West Orange, New Jersey. The weather was rainy, and all the
students had to stay indoors during lunch time because of the bad weather,
except those who went home for lunch.

After eating lunch in our classroom, the teacher left and we were left alone
in our classroom. We were all talking amongst ourselves when the subject of
hobbies, sports and fathers came up. Some of the students explained how their
fathers watched sports on television, and followed the progress of different
teams as a hobby, and even went to a few games on the weekends.

Then, one of the students turned to me and said, "John! What team does your
father like??". "Oh, my father could care less about sports", I said.
"Well, what does he do in his spare time?", someone asked. "He talks to hams",
I answered.

At that point silence fell over the entire classroom and every student began
to stare at me as if I were from the planet Xenon! After a few seconds of
thought, Gina S. broke the silence and tried to "save" me from looking like
a fool. She turned to one of the students and said, "Well, you talk to a dog?
His father talks to hams!".
